Gilgit-Baltistan is Pakistan's northernmost administrative territory, a 72,000 sq km region that sits at the meeting of the Karakoram, Himalaya, Hindukush and Pamir mountain ranges. Five of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks (K2, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II) rise inside its borders, along with more than fifty 7,000-metre peaks and some of the largest glaciers outside the polar regions. The territory splits historically into two: Gilgit district in the west (Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Naltar, Astore, Chilas, Gilgit town) and Baltistan district in the east (Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu, Deosai). Local people speak Shina, Burushaski, Balti, Wakhi and Khowar across the different valleys, one of the densest concentrations of language diversity anywhere on Earth.
