Anamoly of Karakorams
At an altitude of 2800m, Naltar is an anomaly of Karakorams, hidden in the mountains- up a dramatic, barren gorge 19km long as you start from Nomal; is suprosingal green and lush. Climate is some what alpine thus valley is wooded with pine, spruce, birch and juniper trees. Some climatic quirk gives it three times more rainfall than Gilgit, thus in winters Naltar Ski slope attracts lots of tourists and Ski-Lovers. Naltar is also famous for its colourful lakes like Satrangi and Blue Lake. A short hike from Blue Lake to Shingu Meadows and Lake is quite worth the hike and is an ideal camping site in summers.

Naltar is reached only via Gilgit. From Gilgit town, drive 30 minutes north on the Karakoram Highway to Nomal, then transfer into 4x4 jeeps for the 19 km jeep track that climbs through a dramatic barren gorge for 60 to 90 minutes before opening out into the surprisingly green, forested Naltar bowl. Sedans and 2WD SUVs cannot make it past Nomal. Winter access remains open for the ski slope from December to March.
Blue Lake sits 20 minutes further up the valley from Naltar Bala, a deep-turquoise lake ringed by pine and spruce, one of the most photographed spots in Gilgit-Baltistan. Boat rides and short walks around the shore are the main activities. Best in June to September, snowbound from November.
Satrangi Lake, the seven-coloured lake, is a 3 to 4 hour return hike from Blue Lake, gaining about 400 m to a wide alpine basin with a lake that shifts colour with the light. A quieter alternative to Blue Lake and worth the effort if you have a full day.
Shinghu Meadows and Lake, a longer hike above Blue Lake, are the classic overnight camping spot in Naltar, wide grasslands ringed by peaks with the Snow Leopard Viewpoint above. Best from July to September as a one-night camp.
The Pakistan Air Force operates a working ski slope with a chairlift at Naltar Bala from December to March, one of only two ski resorts in the country. Basic equipment rental, ski school and a base lodge. Winter access from Gilgit stays open, and Naltar becomes a genuine ski destination in January and February.
Lala Rukh Resort is the top luxury pick in Naltar Bala, timber-and-stone rooms with forest views, in-house dining and reliable heating in shoulder season. Beyond this, options are basic PTDC-style motels and simple guesthouses, better booked through your operator.
Naltar sits at 2,800 m, high enough for mild altitude effects on your first afternoon, take it easy on arrival. Nights are cold even in July. Phone signal is limited above Nomal, and there are no ATMs in the valley.
Naltar is Shina-speaking Dardic country like the rest of Gilgit district, with small permanent villages at Naltar Bala and Nomal, and Gujjar summer camps around Shinghu. Food is simple valley cooking, mostly what the guesthouse or resort kitchen puts out, with local trout when in season. The pull here is the landscape rather than the settlement, three different coloured lakes within a few kilometres of each other is what draws travellers up the jeep track.
