Ancient route to Srinagar
Astore naming both the town and valley, was the original route between Central Asia (via Yasin-Gilgit) to Srinagar in Kashmir. Astore town at 2400m lies in a 30km long gorge in north-east to Karakoram Highway; is a journey of about two hours from KKH. In ancient times this was the most difficult section of Gilgit-Srinagar route, specially the Burzil Pass which till date receives highest precipitation and is only open for 5 summer months. Valley ahead of Astore town is fairly wide and features the ultra blue Chilam Stream on route to Deosai in east and Nanga Parbat hidden in a sub valley of Tarashing in its south-west.

Astore branches off the Karakoram Highway at Jaglot, roughly halfway between Gilgit and Chilas. From the KKH turnoff, the Astore road climbs into a 30 km gorge for about 2 hours, reaching Astore town at 2,400 m. Most travellers reach Astore either as part of a summer Deosai loop from Skardu, or as a Nanga Parbat side trip from the KKH. Total from Islamabad is 18 to 20 hours split across two days.
Beyond Astore town, the road continues east over the Burzil Pass, historically the trade route between Central Asia via Gilgit and Srinagar in Kashmir. Burzil now receives the highest recorded snowfall in the region and is open only 4 to 5 summer months (July to early October). Once over Burzil, the road drops into Minimarg, the classic overnight destination on the Deosai loop.
Rama Lake sits at 3,300 m in a bowl beneath Chongra Peak, a 45-minute drive plus short walk from Astore town. Rama Meadows below the lake, wide, green and open, is the classic camping spot. Both are open from June to September, snowbound from November. Half a day from Astore town, or an overnight camp at Rama.
Minimarg, an hour east of Astore town past the Burzil Pass, is a wide alpine river valley with grassland, pine ridges and a tent village that has become the standard summer stopover on the Deosai loop. From Minimarg, jeep tracks continue into Deosai and drop into Skardu, or turn south to the Rupal side of Nanga Parbat via Tarashing.
Tarashing, in a side valley south-west of Astore town, is the base for the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat, the mountain's 4,600 m south wall, the highest single mountain face on Earth. Herrligkoffer Base Camp is reached by a full day trek from Tarashing at 3,600 m and is the counterpoint to the more visited Fairy Meadows side of the mountain.
Mulberry Inn is the luxury pick in Astore town, modern rooms with a garden and reliable heating in the shoulder season. Tent Village Minimarg is the standard summer camp along the Deosai loop, fully-serviced canvas tents with mattresses and in-house dining, open June to mid-September only. Above Tarashing on the Rupal side, accommodation is basic trekker guesthouses and camping only.
The Astore-Minimarg-Deosai loop is a summer-only route, roughly July to mid-September. Outside this window, plan Astore only as far as the town itself and Rama Lake. Phone signal is limited above Astore town, and there are no ATMs beyond it. Nights are cold at Astore altitude even in July, pack warm layers.
Astore is Shina-speaking, historically part of the Astore-Chilas cultural belt at the edge of Dardic Gilgit. The valley was a strategic crossroads for centuries with traders moving between Yasin, Gilgit and Srinagar, and its people retain the Dardic mountain-village tradition of shared summer pastures and winter valley settlements. Food is simple mountain cooking with valley trout in season and apricot-and-walnut breakfasts.
