The large kingdom of Nagar, across the Hunza River, was first settled by Balti’s who arrived over Hispar Pass from Baltistan along the Biafo-Hispar glacier. Hispar village is certainly ancient up a difficult gorge at the foot of Hispar Glacier. Later in 14th century Hunzukuts settled in central Nagar and Kingdom of Nagar became eventually bigger than Hunza and there are stories of multiples wars between the two kingdoms over control of power or land. Rakaposhi although famous for its unhindered view from Hunza, but actually lies in Nagar along with many other 7000m peaks like Spantic, Miar & Diran. Thus Nagar is a paradise for trekking & mountaineering, with an easy access to Rakaposhi Base Camp, Rush Lake & Spantic Base Camp. Nagar also unhindered views to the complete wall of Ultar Sar, from Rush Lake, Hopar & Rush Peak.

Getting there, what to do, where to stay, and what to eat — the local ground truth.
Nagar sits directly across the Hunza River from Karimabad, and both banks are strung along the Karakoram Highway. From Islamabad drive north on the KKH to Gilgit (18 to 20 hours split with a night in Naran or Chilas), and continue 3 hours to the Nagar side. Most travellers base in Karimabad on the Hunza bank and day-trip into Nagar via the Hunza Bridge at Nasirabad. The road above Nagar Khas to Hopar and Minapin is a narrow jeep track.
The fastest route is the daily PIA flight to Gilgit (GIL) from Islamabad, 60 minutes, followed by a 2.5 to 3 hour drive on the KKH to Nagar. Flights are weather-dependent and cancel often in winter, plan a buffer day.
Rakaposhi at 7,788 m is the mountain most travellers photograph from the Hunza side, but the peak itself lies inside Nagar and rises directly from the valley floor with the greatest continuous vertical relief of any mountain on Earth (nearly 6,000 m from base to summit). The Zero Point Rakaposhi viewpoint on the KKH, 20 minutes past Chalt, is the roadside classic, glass-walled cafe and a wide bench of grass looking straight up the north face. Best light is early morning.
From Minapin village a 2 to 3 day return trek climbs through pine forest and juniper meadows to Tagaphiri at 3,500 m, the classic Rakaposhi base camp, one of the easiest 7,000 m base camps in Pakistan and a favourite first Himalayan trek for many climbers. The camp sits on the lateral moraine of the Minapin Glacier with a wall of ice cliffs across the valley and the summit dominating the sky above. Best from June to early October.
A 45-minute jeep climb from Aliabad crosses the Hunza River and climbs to Hopar, a shelf of hanging villages above the confluence of the Hopar and Bualtar glaciers. The two glaciers converge in a slow-moving black rubble sea directly below the villages, and the viewpoint tea stalls above them are one of the most dramatic glacier overlooks in the country. Hopar is also the launch point for the Rush Lake trek.
Rush Lake at 4,694 m is one of the highest alpine lakes of its size in the world, a 4 to 5 day return trek from Hopar via the Bualtar Glacier. Rush Peak (5,098 m) sits above the lake and adds an extra day, offering a sneak peek to K2 on a clear morning. The full-frame view from the lake takes in Miar, Diran, Spantik and back to Rakaposhi, arguably the widest 7,000-m panorama on any trekking route in Pakistan.
From Hopar, a 4 to 5 day trek up the Barpu Glacier reaches Miar Peak (6,824 m) base camp, a serious but doable approach for fit trekkers with a guide. Diran (7,266 m), the pyramidal white summit visible on every drive up the KKH from Chalt, is approached from Minapin on the same trail head as Rakaposhi Base Camp, splitting off at higher camp for the Diran side. Spantik (7,027 m), the Golden Peak, is visible from Rush Lake and the ridges above Hopar but its base camp is approached from Arandu in Baltistan via the Chogolungma Glacier rather than from the Nagar side.
For two to three weeks each spring, cherry, apricot and apple blossoms carpet the terraces of Hopar, Minapin, Nagar Khas and Nilt in pink and white, framed by the still snow-clad wall of Rakaposhi. Blossom peaks earlier at lower Nilt (early April) and later at Hopar (early May). This is the most photographed window in the entire Karakoram, book accommodation on the Hunza side a month in advance.
From late September through October, the poplars, apricots, cherries and mulberries turn yellow, orange and merlot red, and Rakaposhi holds its clearest skies of the year. Autumn in Nagar is quieter than the crowded summer months and considered by many photographers the single best week in the northern areas. Peak colour is usually in the first two weeks of October.
June to early September is the trekking window for Rakaposhi Base Camp, Rush Lake and Spantik. Days are 15 to 25°C in the valley and cool on the trails, nights at Tagaphiri and Rush Lake drop below freezing. Above 4,000 m, snow can linger into July after a heavy winter.
There is no luxury property on the Nagar side of the river yet, most travellers base in Karimabad on the Hunza bank (Eagles Nest, Luxus Hunza, Serena Hunza, Hard Rock Hunza) and day-trip into Nagar. On the Nagar side, Minapin has trekker-focused guesthouses like Osho Thang and Diran Guest House for climbers on the Rakaposhi and Diran approaches, and Hopar has simple family-run guesthouses aimed at the Rush Lake trekking crowd. All are basic, cash only, and best booked through an operator.
Multi-day treks (Rakaposhi Base Camp, Rush Lake, Spantik) need a certified guide and porters, arranged through your operator 2 to 3 weeks in advance. There are no ATMs above Karimabad, carry cash for the whole Nagar leg. Phone signal is patchy on the Nagar side and absent past Hopar. Water is glacier-melt and should be filtered or purified. Above 4,000 m, plan an acclimatisation day, altitude sickness is a genuine risk for first-time trekkers.
Nagar is Burushaski-speaking like Hunza but is Twelver Shia Muslim rather than Ismaili, and the two kingdoms fought regular wars over the Karakoram trade route from the 14th century until British arbitration in 1889. Local cuisine mirrors Hunza (chapshuro meat-filled bread, apricot butter khurpo, walnut and mulberry breakfasts, Hunza pink salt tea) with a slightly heavier meat tradition owing to the more livestock-focused Nagar economy. The valley's mountaineering pedigree is unusually strong for its size, several of Pakistan's best-known climbing families are from Hopar and Minapin, and most Karakoram porter teams are drawn from Nagar villages.
