Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), commonly called Azad Kashmir, is the Pakistan-administered portion of the pre-1947 princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, running along the Line of Control that separates it from India-administered Kashmir. It is a mountainous region of dense conifer forest, alpine river valleys and Himalayan meadows, with the Neelam River draining its main tourist valley. Muzaffarabad is the administrative capital. The region has its own government, prime minister, president and Supreme Court under a special constitutional arrangement with Pakistan. Local people speak Kashmiri, Hindko, Pahari and Gojri, with strong linguistic and cultural ties to the Kashmir Valley across the LoC.

How to get to Azad Kashmir
By road from Islamabad
Muzaffarabad is a 4-hour drive from Islamabad via Murree and the Kohala Bridge over the Jhelum. From Lahore, allow 7 to 8 hours. The road is open year-round, though winter driving above Murree needs care. There are no scheduled commercial flights to Muzaffarabad. From Muzaffarabad, the Neelam Valley Road follows the LoC north-east, with Keran at 5 to 6 hours, Sharda 2 hours further, and Kel and Taobut another 3 to 4 hours beyond.
Places to visit in Azad Kashmir
Muzaffarabad anchors any visit (Pir Chinasi viewpoint, Neelum-Jhelum confluence, Red Fort). The Neelam Valley is the flagship destination with Keran (LoC view), Sharda (ancient Sanskrit learning centre), Kel and Arang Kel meadow, Taobut (last village), Ratti Galli Lake trek, and Chitha Katha Lake trek. Chitha Katha and Shounter are the wilderness upper end. Rawalakot, Banjosa Lake and the Jhelum Valley (Chikkar, Chinari) sit in the southern half of the region. Toli Peer and Bagh are quieter alternatives.
When to visit
Summer (June to September)
The main tourist season. All roads are open, all treks and passes accessible, temperatures sit 15 to 25°C in the upper valleys. Peak crowds in July and August, book Neelam Valley accommodation 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Best window for the Ratti Galli and Chitha Katha lake treks.
Autumn (October to mid-November)
Chinar, poplar and maple trees turn gold, orange and red across the Neelam Valley. Cool days, cold nights, quieter than the summer peak. Ratti Galli closes by mid-October.
Winter (December to March)
The road above Sharda closes with heavy snow. Only Muzaffarabad, Keran and Sharda stay accessible. Snowfall in the mid-valley is heavy and photogenic, and Pir Chinasi becomes a winter snow-day destination. Kel, Arang Kel, Taobut, Ratti Galli and Chitha Katha are all closed until May or June.
Culture and history
Azad Kashmir carries the layered heritage of an ancient Sanskrit learning centre (Sharda Peeth housed one of South Asia's greatest medieval universities, and the Sharda script it produced was once the writing system of Kashmir), the Kashmir Sultanate and Mughal era, and a modern border-region community shaped by decades of division. Traditional Kashmiri wooden architecture with pitched roofs and carved balconies is still the dominant house style in the upper valleys. Kashmiri wazwan cuisine influences the local food, with slow-cooked meat dishes, kashmiri chai (a pink salt tea), and river trout from the Neelam being the local staples.
Practical notes
Foreign nationals need a No Objection Certificate arranged in advance through your operator for travel into Azad Kashmir, plan for a week's notice. Above Kel there are military checkpoints where you must present ID. Phone signal above Muzaffarabad switches to the Special Communications Organisation (SCO) network, most Pakistani mobile networks do not work, buy an SCO SIM in Muzaffarabad if you need connectivity. There are no ATMs above Muzaffarabad, carry cash for the whole trip. Nights are cold at Arang Kel altitude even in July, pack thermal layers.
