Origin of Lahore goes back to 1000 BC according to a Hindu Legend by Prince Loh, and at around 1021 AD came under muslim influence after conquest of Lahore by Mahmood Ghaznavi. After 1206 AD Ghauri’s conquered the city but finally Lahore to got its architectural glory by Mughals after Babar’s conquests it in 1524 - a cornerstone in Mughal Empire’s history of subcontinent. In Mughal era (1524-1739), Lahore flourished along Ravi River as a fortified walled city accessible by its 13 gates was epicentre for evolution of music, art and architecture in the region. Architecture Marvels like Wazir Khan Mosque, Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque and Shalamar Gardens till date present a contrast to influence of British era (1857-1957) - evident in its Victorian style buildings like Tollinton Market, Lahore Museum and National College of Arts. Modern day Lahore is busy; known for its Desi cuisines, now offers diverse experiences like Art Galleries, Museums and water parks.

Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE) is Pakistan's second-largest airport, with hourly PIA, AirSial and AirBlue flights from Islamabad and Karachi (both under an hour), and daily international connections from Dubai, Doha, Jeddah, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur and London. The airport is 15 km from the city centre, 30 to 40 minutes by taxi in normal traffic.
From Islamabad, the M-2 Motorway is a 4 to 5 hour drive, one of the smoothest highways in the country. From Karachi, the drive is a long 18 to 20 hours via the M-9 and N-5, or the Green Line express train covers the same route in 17 hours. From Faisalabad, the M-3 is 90 minutes. Wagah border with India is a 30-minute drive east of Lahore, currently the only operational land crossing between the two countries.
The Lahore Fort (Shahi Qila) is the citadel of the Mughal Empire in the subcontinent, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rebuilt in its current form by Akbar in 1566 and expanded by Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. Highlights are the marble-and-mirror Sheesh Mahal, the Naulakha Pavilion, the Diwan-i-Am audience hall, and the massive Alamgiri Gate that opens onto the Badshahi Mosque square. Plan at least half a day.
Directly opposite the fort, the Badshahi Mosque was built by Aurangzeb in 1673 and remained the world's largest mosque for over three centuries. Red Sikri sandstone, white marble domes and a courtyard that holds 100,000 worshippers. Free to enter outside prayer times, dress code enforced. The mosque, fort, Roshnai Gate and Iqbal's Mausoleum all sit within a single 500-metre walkable square.
Inside the Walled City near Delhi Gate, Wazir Khan Mosque was built in 1634 during Shah Jahan's reign and is the finest surviving example of Kashi-kari tile mosaic and fresco painting in the subcontinent. Every wall, minaret and dome is covered in Persian-inspired floral tilework in blues, greens and yellows. Recently restored by the Walled City of Lahore Authority.
A five-minute walk from Wazir Khan Mosque, the Shahi Hammam is a Mughal-era royal bath house built in 1635, restored in 2015 to reveal its extensive painted domes and Persianate wall frescoes. Small ticketed monument, 30 to 45 minute visit, and the natural pairing with the mosque and Delhi Gate.
Delhi Gate is one of the six surviving gates of the thirteen that once ringed the Walled City, and the eastern anchor of the Royal Trail, the 1.5 km pedestrianised walk from Delhi Gate through the bazaars and past the mosque and hammam, ending at the Lahore Fort square. Best done at dawn or in the late afternoon with a Walled City Authority guide, gives the single best introduction to old Lahore.
Fakir Khana, tucked inside a courtyard house near Bhati Gate, is the largest private museum in South Asia, held by the Fakir family since the Sikh era of Ranjit Singh (early 19th century). Its 20,000-object collection spans Mughal miniatures, Sikh weaponry, Gandharan sculpture, Chinese porcelain and Kashmiri shawls. Open by prior appointment only, arranged through a Walled City tour.
Built by Shah Jahan in 1642 on the eastern edge of the city, the Shalimar Gardens are a three-terrace Persian-style Mughal garden with 410 fountains, marble pavilions and reflecting pools. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Half a day, best in the cool early morning or evening.
Beyond the Mughal core, Anarkali Bazaar is one of the oldest surviving markets in South Asia, running continuously since the 16th century. Fort Road Food Street, on a lit-up terrace opposite the fort, is the classic evening food destination. British-era Lahore centres on the Mall, with the Lahore Museum (curated by Rudyard Kipling's father in the 1890s), the National College of Arts, GPO Chowk, Tollinton Market and the Aitchison College campus, all fine Victorian and Indo-Saracenic buildings.
Every evening at sunset, the Pakistan Rangers and Indian Border Security Force hold a synchronised flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah crossing, 30 minutes east of Lahore. Highly theatrical, stadium seating on both sides, one of the most memorable evenings any first-time visitor to Lahore can plan. Free entry, arrive 90 minutes early on weekends and national holidays.
Pearl Continental Lahore on the Mall, Nishat Hotel on Ferozepur Road, and Avari Lahore on the Mall are the three flagship 5-star properties with pools, spas and reliable dining. All within 20 minutes of the Walled City.
For a stay inside the Walled City itself, Haveli Barood Khana is a restored 17th-century haveli boutique property on the Royal Trail, small (a handful of rooms) and unique. Faletti's Hotel on Egerton Road is a restored 1880 colonial property, and Rose Palace and the Nishat Emporium mall hotels give solid mid-range comfort near the Mall.
Best season is October to March, when day temperatures sit in the mid-teens to mid-twenties. April to June is hot (up to 45°C in June), and the July to September monsoon brings humidity and short heavy rains. Walking tours through the Walled City are best done in the cool morning hours before 10:00. Traffic in Lahore is heavy at all hours, allow 90 minutes for any cross-city drive during rush periods.
Lahore is the food capital of Pakistan and the Punjabi cuisine capital of the subcontinent. The Lahori day starts with nihari (slow-cooked beef stew) and siri paye (head-and-trotter curry) with kulcha bread, moves through chargha (whole marinated grilled chicken), lamb karahi and paya chana at lunch, and ends with fresh-fried jalebi, kulfi falooda and gulab jamun for dessert. The Old City spring festival Basant, once famous for city-wide kite flying, is officially banned but still celebrated informally in February. Sufi music every Thursday night at the shrines of Data Ganj Bakhsh and Baba Shah Jamal is one of the deepest religious-musical experiences in the country. The Alhamra Arts Council and Ali Institute host classical dance, theatre and film screenings year-round.
