Punjab means five rivers, referring to the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej that drain the region and made it one of the world's oldest agricultural heartlands. It is Pakistan's most populous province, home to Lahore (the cultural capital), the Mughal-era heart of the subcontinent, and holds some of South Asia's oldest continuously-lived-in cities. History runs deep: the Indus Valley Civilisation's Harappan ruins date to 3000 BCE, Alexander the Great's eastern boundary crossed the Punjab in 326 BCE, and the Mughal Empire made Lahore one of its four imperial capitals between 1524 and 1739. Local people speak Punjabi (Pakistan's most-spoken language), with Urdu as the shared urban second language and Saraiki in the southern belt.

How to get to Punjab
By air
Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE) in Lahore is the main gateway, with hourly domestic flights from Islamabad and Karachi and direct international flights from every Gulf hub, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Istanbul, London and Toronto. Multan (MUX), Faisalabad (LYP), Sialkot (SKT) and Bahawalpur (BHV) also have domestic and limited international flights, useful for a focused Southern Punjab visit.
By road and rail
The M-2 Motorway from Islamabad to Lahore is a 4 to 5 hour drive. The Green Line express train from Islamabad and Karachi to Lahore is a comfortable overnight sleeper option. Wagah Border with India, 30 minutes east of Lahore, is currently the only operational land crossing between the two countries.
Places to visit in Punjab
Lahore
Lahore is the anchor destination and holds a Mughal Walled City (Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque, Wazir Khan Mosque, Shahi Hammam, Delhi Gate, Shalimar Gardens) with three UNESCO World Heritage listings between them. Two full days minimum to walk it properly, food street on Fort Road for dinner, Wagah border ceremony in the evening.
Harappa ruins
Harappa near Sahiwal, 200 km south-west of Lahore, is the second-largest city of the Indus Valley Civilisation and the site that gave its name to the whole Harappan culture (2600 to 1900 BCE). Fired-brick city walls, a citadel mound, granary foundations, drainage channels and worker housing are all still visible on the excavated grid. A small but well-curated on-site museum holds the seal-and-figurine collection. Best done as a day trip from Lahore or Multan, or as an overnight stop on the Lahore-to-Multan drive.
Multan and Uch Sharif — City of Saints
Multan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, dating back over 3,000 years, and is known across the subcontinent as the City of Saints for the dozens of Sufi shrines that draw pilgrims year-round. The blue-tile shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam (14th century) is the visual signature, a massive octagonal brick dome dressed in kashi-kari tilework and considered one of the finest pre-Mughal monuments in South Asia. Bahauddin Zakariya, Shams Tabrez and Shah Yousuf Gardezi shrines complete the Sufi circuit. The old city bazaars around the Ghanta Ghar clocktower are famous for blue Multani pottery, camel-skin lamps and mango kulfi. An hour south-west, Uch Sharif holds one of the great forgotten heritage sites of Pakistan, a 13th to 15th century mausoleum cluster (Bibi Jawindi, Baha ul-Halim, Ustad Nuria, Jalaluddin Bukhari) on the UNESCO tentative list, brick-and-blue-tile domes half-collapsed on a mound above the fields and photogenic in the afternoon light. Best done together in a 2 to 3 day southern Punjab loop, and only in the winter months, both towns get brutally hot in summer.
Bahawalpur — Noor Mahal and Sadiq Garh Palace
Bahawalpur was the seat of the Nawabs of Bahawalpur, an independent princely state until 1955, and the city still carries the layered architecture of that era. Noor Mahal, the 1875 Nawab's palace in Italianate style, is the visual signature and is open to visitors with a maintained museum inside. Sadiq Garh Palace at Dera Nawab Sahib, 30 km outside Bahawalpur city, is one of the great unusual sights in Pakistan, a vast late-19th-century palace-and-mosque complex built by Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan IV, currently abandoned and locked in an inheritance dispute between the Nawab's descendants. The palace facade with its four corner domes, the flanking mosque and the mile-long approach avenue remain one of a kind, with no other privately-built princely-state palace at this scale in the country. External viewing only, an early morning visit for the light and a quiet approach along the palace wall makes it worth the drive. The Bahawalpur Museum, Central Library and Darbar Mahal round out the city heritage circuit.
Derawar Fort and the Cholistan Desert
Derawar Fort rises out of the Cholistan Desert 100 km south of Bahawalpur, a massive square 9th century fortress with 40 bastions each 30 metres high, still owned by the descendants of the Nawabs of Bahawalpur. The scale is impossible to convey in photographs, and the fort at sunset in the surrounding desert is one of the great single-frame images in Pakistan. The nearby Abbasi Mosque and the Cholistan Jeep Rally (every February) are the other reasons to plan a trip. Best from October to March, the desert is unbearable in summer.
Murree, Khan Pur and Taxila (Islamabad-adjacent)
Murree, Pakistan's oldest colonial hill station, sits 60 minutes east of Islamabad on the Punjab side. Khan Pur Dam near Taxila offers cliff-diving and watersports as an Islamabad day trip. Taxila itself is Pakistan's most important Gandharan archaeological site with a UNESCO World Heritage listing, easy day trip from Islamabad.
When to visit
Winter (October to March)
The best season across the entire province, and the only comfortable time for Multan, Uch Sharif, Bahawalpur, Harappa and the Cholistan Desert. Days sit in the mid-teens to mid-twenties, evenings are cool. Murree gets reliable snowfall in January and February. Lahore's heritage walks and outdoor food streets are at their most comfortable. Basant kite festival (technically banned but still informally celebrated) falls in February.
Summer (April to September)
Hot to extreme, 30 to 45°C by day across the plains, above 45°C in Multan and Bahawalpur through May and June, with humidity added during the July to September monsoon. Not the season to be walking Lahore's Old City or the Cholistan Desert. Murree and the Galiyat (in KPK) become the natural summer escapes.
Culture and cuisine
Punjabi culture is generous, food-forward and hospitality-driven. Lahore is the food capital of Pakistan, its signature dishes being nihari, siri paye, chargha, chapli kebab, halwa puri breakfast, and desserts like jalebi, kulfi falooda and gulab jamun. Southern Punjab layers on a distinct Saraiki-Multani cuisine, sohan halwa, Multani mango kulfi, seetal drink and slow-cooked mutton with pit-fired naan. Sufi music every Thursday night at the shrines of Data Ganj Bakhsh in Lahore, Bulleh Shah in Kasur, Baba Farid in Pakpattan and Shah Rukn-e-Alam in Multan is one of the deepest musical-religious traditions in South Asia. Punjabi qawwali, the devotional music tradition, reached its global peak through Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan of Faisalabad. Craft traditions include Multan blue pottery and camel-skin lamps, Kasur khussa footwear, and Multan and Bahawalpur block-printed textiles.
Practical notes
Foreign nationals do not need any permit for Punjab tourism, and the province is one of Pakistan's most straightforward regions to travel. Lahore, Islamabad and Multan have reliable ride-hail apps (Careem, Yango). Bahawalpur, Uch Sharif, Sadiq Garh, Harappa and Derawar are best done with a private car and local driver arranged through your operator, the desert leg to Derawar in particular needs 4x4. Lahore traffic is heavy at all hours, allow generous drive times across the city. Wagah border ceremony arrival for weekdays or arrive 90 minutes early on weekends.
