Galiyat region lies between the hills of Murree and Abbotabad, its dark green mountains densely forested with pine trees is equally scenic in winters and summers. There are multiple Galli’s like Changla Galli, Khaira Galli, Nathigalli being the most famous, and Dunga Galli; a base station to Muhskpuri and Pipeline Track. Average elevation is above 2000 meters and receives heavy snowfall in winters which attracts tourists and hiking enthusiast specially on weekends. It’s just a drive of two hours from Islamabad and an hour from Abbotabad.

Galiyat is the closest hill station to Islamabad after Murree, a 2 to 2.5 hour drive via the Murree Expressway and the Nathia Gali road, or a slightly longer 3-hour drive via Abbottabad. From Lahore, allow 5 to 6 hours via the M-2. From Karachi, most travellers fly to Islamabad and drive up. The road is open year-round, though winter driving above 2,000 m needs care after snowfall.
Nathia Gali at 2,500 m is the largest and most popular of the Galis, a colonial-era hill station with a 19th-century church, the summer Governor House gates, a bazaar of walnut-wood carvings, and forest walks in every direction. Winter snowfall is heavy and reliable, summer highs stay in the low twenties, making it a genuine year-round base.
The Pipeline Track is a flat, forested 4 km walk between Dunga Gali and Ayubia, one of the most popular family walks in the country, running mostly under pine cover on a former water-pipeline alignment. From Dunga Gali, the harder Mukshpuri Top hike climbs 3 hours through forest to a summit at 2,800 m with wide Kashmir views. Miranjani, the second summit above Nathia Gali, is a full-day return hike at 2,982 m.
Ayubia National Park protects the last stretch of moist temperate conifer forest in the Galis, home to leopards, monkeys and pheasants. The Ayubia chairlift climbs from Ayubia to a small summit with views over Nathia Gali and, on clear days, toward the Kashmir foothills. Half a day for the chairlift plus a short forest walk.
The smaller Galis, Changla and Khaira, sit on the Islamabad side of the ridge and are quiet alternatives to the busier Nathia Gali. Both have simple forest walks, small bazaars and cottage-style guesthouses. Worth a stop on the way in or out.
Gali's End by Roomy is the top luxury pick in Nathia Gali, contemporary rooms with pine-forest views, in-house dining and reliable central heating in winter. Beyond this, Galiyat has a wide spread of PTDC properties and older colonial cottages, most best booked through an operator to filter for actual standards.
December to February brings reliable snowfall and can slow the drive from Islamabad significantly, plan for chains or a 4x4 in heavy weeks. Monsoon (July to August) brings dense mist and unstable slopes, best avoided for hikes. Nathia Gali gets crowded on summer weekends, target weekdays or shoulder-season months (April to May, October to November) for a quieter visit.
The Galis are Hindko-speaking Hazara country, at the meeting point of KPK, Punjab and Kashmir. Colonial-era architecture, from the Anglican church at Nathia Gali to the pipeline itself, still defines the built environment. Food is standard Pakistani hill-station fare with grilled fish, chapli kebab and karahi being the road-side staples, and pine-honey the takeaway shopping. The pull here is not heritage or landmarks but forest, elevation and easy accessibility from Islamabad.
