Islamabad

Islamabad is Pakistan's purpose-built federal capital, planned in the 1960s to replace Karachi as the seat of government and inaugurated in 1967. Sitting at the foot of the Margalla Hills at the northern edge of the Potohar Plateau, it is one of the world's youngest planned capital cities, laid out in a grid of tree-lined sectors alongside its older twin, Rawalpindi. For travellers, Islamabad functions primarily as the launchpad for northern-area tourism — almost every Hunza, Skardu, Chitral, Fairy Meadows, Neelam Valley and Naran itinerary begins and ends at Islamabad International Airport.

Islamabad International Airport (ISB), 25 km west of the city, connects to every provincial capital by air and to every major Gulf hub, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Istanbul, London and Toronto directly. By road, Lahore is a 4 to 5 hour M-2 Motorway drive, Peshawar 2 hours on the M-1, Karachi an 18-hour overland option. The Green Line express train serves Islamabad from Lahore and Karachi.

The Faisal Mosque at the foot of the Margalla Hills is the modern architectural icon. Daman-e-Koh and Pir Sohawa viewpoints look out across the entire capital. Saidpur Village restored as a food-and-heritage precinct sits in the foothills. Rawal Lake, Lok Virsa Heritage Museum, the Pakistan Monument and the National Art Gallery are the other city highlights. Trail 5 (Sakan Trail) is an easy 3.5 km morning hike into the Margallas. Day trips reach Taxila (Gandharan Buddhist ruins, UNESCO World Heritage Site) 40 minutes west and Khan Pur Dam (cliff-diving, boating, parasailing) 45 minutes north.

Best season is October to March, with mild days (15 to 25°C) and cool nights. April to June is hot (30 to 40°C). The July to September monsoon brings short heavy rains and adds humidity. The city is genuinely year-round comfortable, and its role as a northern-areas launchpad means most travellers spend one arrival and one departure night here regardless of season.

As a young planned capital, Islamabad has no single indigenous cuisine or musical tradition of its own but concentrates the best of every Pakistani region — from Peshawar-style chapli kebab at Kabul Restaurant to Lahori nihari at Waris and Karachi-style biryani at Savour. Cultural life centres on the Pakistan National Council of the Arts, the Kuch Khaas centre in F-6 and the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum, with rotating gallery openings, classical music evenings, poetry recitals and film screenings throughout the year. Diplomatic missions, international NGOs and universities give the city an unusually cosmopolitan character for its size.

Foreign nationals do not need a permit for Islamabad, and the city is one of Pakistan's safest and most straightforward destinations. Careem and Yango ride-hail apps work well. Ride 40 minutes from the airport to F-6, F-7 or Blue Area for the main hotel clusters. Government offices close on Saturday and Sunday, private and hospitality service is uninterrupted.
