Balochistan is Pakistan's largest province by area (347,000 sq km, 44 percent of the country) and its most sparsely populated. Bordered by Iran to the west, Afghanistan to the north-west and the Arabian Sea to the south, it is a landscape of arid plateau, rocky desert, dramatic coastal cliffs and the Sulaiman and Kirthar mountain ranges. Historically known as ancient Gedrosia, this is the region through which Alexander the Great's army retreated in 325 BCE. Quetta is the provincial capital. Most tourism concentrates on the Makran Coastal Highway between Karachi and Gwadar, with Hingol National Park and its Princess of Hope, Balochistan Sphinx and Chandragup mud volcanoes as headline stops. Local people speak Balochi, Brahui, and Pashto in the north.

How to get to Balochistan
By road from Karachi
The Makran Coastal Highway (N-10) is a fully-sealed 650 km road that runs from Karachi along the entire Balochistan coast. Kund Malir and Hingol National Park are 4 hours west of Karachi, Ormara is another 3 hours, and Gwadar is 8 to 9 hours from Karachi total. From Karachi, this is the standard entry point for the tourist Makran belt.
By air
Quetta International Airport (UET) is served by PIA and AirBlue from Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore. Gwadar International Airport (GWD), rebuilt with Chinese support in 2024, is served by PIA from Karachi (60 minutes) and via Karachi from Islamabad.
Places to visit in Balochistan
The Makran belt is by far the most-visited tourist zone. Hingol National Park (Pakistan's largest national park) holds the Princess of Hope, the Balochistan Sphinx, Chandragup mud volcanoes and the Kund Malir beach. Ormara halfway to Gwadar has the seven-rocks (Haft Talar) cliffs and Pearl Beach. Gwadar itself has the natural hammerhead peninsula, East Bay and West Bay beaches, Marine Drive and the fish market at dawn. Jiwani near the Iranian border marks the westernmost tip of the country. Quetta and the Ziarat valley are the other tourism zones, though foreign-national access to both requires additional paperwork.
When to visit
Winter (November to February)
The best season for the Makran coast. Days sit 20 to 28°C by day and evenings are cool, and the dry Balochistan winter light is spectacular. All coastal roads and beaches are at their best.
Spring and autumn (March to April, October)
Shoulder seasons work, warm and dry, but less consistently comfortable than winter.
Summer (May to September)
Hot, humid on the coast, and monsoon rains occasionally flood parts of the interior. Best avoided for coastal Makran. Quetta and Ziarat in the north stay cool at their higher elevation and are the summer alternative.
Culture and history
The name Makran comes from the Persian Mahi Khoran, fish-eaters, and seafood is the centre of the local cuisine, from sajji (slow-roasted fish or lamb) to fresh grouper and pomfret grilled at the beach. Balochi hospitality (melmastia) is unusually warm even by Pakistani standards. Culturally the coast layers the ancient Gedrosia of Alexander's 325 BCE march, the Kech-Makran kingdom of the 5th century BCE, and the modern China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects around Gwadar into a single wide sweep. Balochi music, driven by the sorud and the damburag, carries a strong Persian and Arabic cultural influence from centuries of sea trade with Oman and Iran.
Practical notes
Foreign nationals need a No Objection Certificate arranged in advance through your operator to travel the Makran Coastal Highway and to visit Gwadar, plan for a week's notice. Pakistani nationals need a CNIC at multiple military checkpoints along the road. Phone signal is patchy above Ormara and there are ATMs in Gwadar only. Balochistan is politically the most sensitive of Pakistan's provinces and specific zones (Quetta, tribal borders) require additional clearance and armed escort, always work through an established operator.
