The city of Karachi, home to about 15 million people, multiple ethnicities, religions, is a perfect site of a metroplex in south east Asia. Apart from being largest port city of and Trade hub of Pakistan, its history goes back to early 18th century and started from a small fishing village of Kolachi. In British era it became a port city specially after the opening of Suez Canal and connectivity of Karachi to rest of the continent through railways. It was the capital of Pakistan until 1959, and till date hides many elements of British Era in areas of cantonment and Clifton. Frere Hall, Mohata Palace, Quad e Azam House and the food street of Burns road are among the famous tourist attractions. Art and music is the beeting pulse of the city with small gigs, concerts and art exhibitions happening every weekend keep the city alive.

Jinnah International Airport (KHI) is Pakistan's largest airport and its principal international gateway, with hourly domestic flights from Islamabad and Lahore, and direct international connections from every major hub in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and Europe. The airport is in the south-east of the city, 30 minutes to 60 minutes by taxi depending on traffic and destination.
From Islamabad or Lahore, the drive is a long 18 to 20 hours via the M-2, M-4 and N-5. The Green Line express train from Islamabad and Lahore is a more comfortable option, 17 to 22 hours in sleeper class. Most travellers fly.
Mohatta Palace in Clifton is a Rajasthani-Mughal pink-stone mansion built in 1927 by Marwari merchant Shivratan Mohatta, now Karachi's finest art museum with rotating exhibitions of Pakistani modernists and Islamic art. Combined with a walk along Clifton beach or a stop at the Quaid's Mausoleum, it makes a solid half-day.
Frere Hall (1865), the yellow-stone Venetian Gothic hall in Saddar with Sadequain's Galaxy of Illumination ceiling murals inside, is the anchor of colonial-era Karachi. The Empress Market, Merewether Tower, St Patrick's Cathedral and the KPT building lie within walking distance and give an easy morning's heritage walk.
Burns Road, named for a 19th-century British engineer, is Karachi's oldest continuously running food street. Nihari at Waheed, biryani at Delhi Rabri House, doodh patti at any stall, halwa puri breakfast, and karhai chicken at Ghaffar Kabab House are the classics. Best after dark, most stalls run until 03:00.
Flagstaff House on Fatima Jinnah Road was Muhammad Ali Jinnah's Karachi residence and is now preserved with his furniture, papers and personal library intact. The Mazar-e-Quaid, his white marble mausoleum built in 1970, sits on a hilltop in central Karachi and remains the country's most important national monument. Both worth a morning, 30 minutes apart.
The Karachi Fish Harbour off West Wharf, best visited at dawn, is one of the most active seafood markets in the Arabian Sea, with catches from all along the Sindh and Balochistan coast. A short boat ride from Kemari lands you on Manora Island, a Karachi Port Trust naval town with a 19th-century lighthouse and colonial-era church.
Karachi is the launchpad for most of the Sindh coast and interior. Thatta and Makli Necropolis are 90 minutes east, Keenjhar Lake 2 hours north, Chaukhandi Tombs 45 minutes east, Hingol National Park and Kund Malir 4 hours west, and Hub Dam and Kirthar National Park an hour north-west. Any Karachi itinerary of more than three days is worth extending with one or two of these.

Beyond Ambiance, the Pearl Continental Karachi and Movenpick Karachi remain the reliable large-scale five-star options on the Sharah-e-Faisal spine, both with pools and international dining.
Lokal Flagship in DHA and Lokal Rooms at Shahrah-e-Faisal are the two Lokal-run deluxe properties, contemporary rooms with reliable service in the two most useful Karachi neighbourhoods for a short stay. Both work well for a business or heritage-focused first Karachi visit.
Best season is October to March when day temperatures sit at 22 to 30°C with cool evenings. April to September is hot and humid, sitting above 30°C and often above 40°C. Traffic in Karachi is heavy and often unpredictable, allow 60 to 90 minutes for any cross-city drive at rush hour. Careem and Yango are the ride-hail apps of choice. Foreign nationals do not need any special permit for Karachi city, but do need a No Objection Certificate for the wider Sindh interior.
Karachi is Pakistan's most ethnically layered city, with Sindhi, Muhajir, Pashtun, Punjabi, Baloch, Bohra, Memon, Parsi and Christian communities all leaving marks on the food, music and street life. The signature dishes are Karachi biryani (spicier and drier than its Lahore cousin), nihari, bun kebab, chapli kebab and the Bohra thaal. Art and music thread through the city with rotating openings at the T2F, Canvas Gallery, Koel and Sanat, and live gigs at Aik Zamana Chai and small basement venues. Weekend Cultural evenings at Alliance Francaise, Karachi Literature Festival in February and the Sindh Cultural Day parades in early December are the fixed points in the calendar.
